Cannoli Siciliani Cannoli are traditionally filled with ricotta cheese sweetened with powdered sugar and added of candied fruit, pistachios, and chocolate chips.  Cassata Siciliana The cassata is similar to small cake, and consists of round sponge cake moistened with fruit juices or liqueur. It is then layered with ricotta cheese, candied peel, and a chocolate or vanilla filling similar to cannoli cream. It is covered with a shell of marzipan, pink and green pastel colored icing, and decorative designs. The cassata is finally topped with candied fruit depicting cherries and slices of citrus fruit native to Sicily.  Arancino Siciliano Arancini are fried or, less commonly, baked rice balls, having a diameter of 8-10 cm, filled usually with ragu (meat sauce), but also with tomato sauce, mozzarella, peas, and other things. On the outside they are simply breadcrumbs. |
